Don’t Take Omega 3 Fish Oil Until You Read This!

Many people know that the Omega 3 fatty acids have significant health benefits. Yet few people understand what they are, what they do, and whether they get enough through your diet.  If you’re looking for accurate and easy to understand information on Omega 3 fatty acids – or if you simply want to know which supplement to take – read on – you’ve come to the right place!

What Exactly are Omega 3 Fatty Acids?

Omega 3 is the name given to a class of fat that is necessary for good health. The body cannot make any of its own Omega 3 fats – they must be obtained completely through the diet. For this reason they are called essential fats.

The most common sources of Omega 3 fatty acids are fish, flaxseed and nuts. The best source of Omega 3 is fish. Clinical studies have found that the health benefits of fish oil are due to the fatty acids DHA (docosahexanoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

Nuts and flaxseed contain a differerent Omega 3 fatty acid called ALA (alpha linolenic acid). This has not been studied extensively like fish oil, and its effects on human health are not very well known.

Do I Get Enough Omega 3 Through my Diet?

The answer is most likely ‘no’.

Modern diets supply an inadequate quantity of Omega 3 fats and as a result many people are deficient. During the last century, changes such as the introduction of factory farming techniques and the mass production of Omega 6 cooking oil, have lead to Omega 3 fatty acids almost completely disappearing from the diet.

The optimal ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 in the diet is estimated to be 2:1. The average ratio in most Western diets is now about 20:1.

The Health Benefits of Omega 3

Omega 3 fats are used in the body to produce a whole class of signaling hormones known as prostaglandins. When you are deficient in Omega 3 fats, your body cannot produce these hormones in normal levels. This results in poor health, low energy and vitality, and eventually disease.

Reintroducing Omega 3 to the diet by taking a fish oil supplement allows these hormones to be produced again, resulting in many health benefits.

These include –

  • preventing and relieving depression and bipolar disorder
  • lowering triglycerides and reducing the risk of heart disease
  • preventing and relieving arthritis
  • treating skin problems
  • healthy pregnancy and child development
  • improving vision problems

What is Cod Liver Oil ?

Cod Liver Oil is an oil extracted from cod livers. Many of you will remember being given a teaspoon of cod liver oil a day as children. Unlike fish oil cod liver oil contains a large amount of vitamin A and D. These vitamins are fat soluble and will accumulate in the body if you take in more than you need. They are also toxic in excess so caution should be exercised trying to obtain theraputic doses of DHA and EPA from cod liver oil.

Are there any Risks in taking Fish Oil ?

Many Fish Oils contain Mercury and other Pollutants

Due to ocean pollution, many fish oils have high levels of contaminants in the form of PCB’s, and heavy metals including mercury. Mecury can cause birth defects and nervous system damage as well as a host of other problems.

TIP: Obtain a fish oil produced from fish that inhabits non polluted water and that is molecularly distilled to remove PCB’s.

Many Fish Oils are Rancid or contain Additives

Most fish oil in capsules does not come from the same country where it is encapsulated and are subject to transport in tankers, additional handling and additives to prevent rancidity.

TIP: Look for a fish oil that is processed, encapsulated and bottled in the same plant that the fish is processed. You should also look for a fish oil that doesn’t have any additives.

Many Fish Oils contain Low Levels of DHA

Many fish oils contain low levels of DHA (which is the most beneficial component of fish oil).

TIP: Look for a fish oil that contains naturally high levels of both EPA and DHA.

Most people know that the Omega 3 fatty acids have significant health benefits. Yet few people understand what they are, what they do, and whether they get enough through your diet.

What Fish Oil Do I Recommend?

About a year ago, not wanting to leave anything to chance, I did quite a bit of research to find the best fish oil supplement.

The result of my search was a fish oil made by the company, Xtend-Life called Omega 3 / DHA Fish Oil Esters, which I found to be better than anything else available on the market.

For a start, it is made from a fish (Hoki) that has exceptionally high levels of DHA and EPA and inhabits some of the least polluted oceans in the world (to the southwest of New Zealand).

Once caught, the oil is extracted and then undergoes an extensive purification process (molecular distillation) to ensure it is completely free from mercury and other toxic pollutants.

Unlike any other company I am aware of, Xtend-Life then refine the oil further to produce an ‘ester’ . This markedly increases the oil’s bio-availability enhancing the health effects (the body normally has to convert the oil to an ester to make use of it).

I have found that Xtend-Life offer excellent value for money. The table below is reproduced from the Xtend-Life website:

Product Name

Cost per 1000mgs

Xtend-Life

As you can see, they offer better value for money than the four leading suppliers of fish oil.

I have found that Xtend-Life consistently offers great customer service, always responding to enquiries with thoughtful and detailed answers.

They seem to be a company that cares about the quality of their products and the health of their customers.
